Barcelona, Spain - Tarranix partners with Catalonian universities UPC and ICFO to pioneer photonic chip production. Collaboration accelerates transition from optical transistor design to industrial validation. Initiative boosts Catalonia's global leadership in advanced photonic computing technology.
Barcelona-based deep-tech initiative Tarranix has begun crucial collaboration conversations with leading academic institutions—the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO)—to accelerate the transition of its revolutionary optical transistor technology from conceptual design to industrial-scale production.
Tarranix, recognized for its groundbreaking optical transistor that uses polarization of light to process multiple logical states and produce directly truth matrix, marks a paradigm shift in computing by significantly surpassing traditional binary and ternary architectures in speed, efficiency, and scalability.
This strategic conversations for upcoming alliance will involve Tarranix engineers and scientists conducting in-depth visits to UPC and ICFO's advanced testing laboratories, utilizing state-of-the-art microscopes and photonic analysis equipment to refine and validate their pioneering optical transistor technology.
"This collaboration represents a critical milestone in Tarranix’s journey," stated Pere Ciurana, Project Director. "Working alongside prestigious institutions such as UPC and ICFO provides us not only access to unparalleled expertise and facilities but also reinforces our commitment to leading Europe’s photonic revolution."
The collaborative initiative will focus on extensive laboratory testing and microscopic analyses of optical chips to ensure the performance and scalability required for future applications in artificial intelligence, high-speed telecommunications, automotive, aerospace, and cybersecurity.
Through this partnership, Tarranix, UPC, and ICFO aim to solidify Catalonia's position as a global hub for advanced photonic technologies, driving economic growth and innovation across the region.

A significant step toward fully optical logical circuits based on reversible photonic computing.

Tarranix developed a 6 µm vertical grating coupler for 3D photonic interconnections. Si/SiO₂ simulations show efficient light coupling. A Si₃N₄ version is in progress to enhance performance.

Tarranix has completed the first design phase of a photonic crystal (PhC) transistor with out-of-plane emission, adapted to the fabrication capabilities of UPC.
